Hamas leader Khaled Meshal waves the Syrian revolution flag on the second day of his return to the Palestinian Territories after ending 45 years of exile when he arrived in Gaza on Friday, December 7, 2012.
The Palestinian refugee population of about 500,000 in Syria have been caught up in Bashar al-Assad’s crushing of the civilian population since the Syrian revolution began 20 months ago:
“More and more Palestinians are becoming actively involved in the uprising and a majority sympathise with the opposition against Assad,” said a Syrian resident of Yarmouk. “There are Palestinians fighting with the rebels in Yarmouk, some have taken up weapons, they are angry with this regime, they have had enough,” he said.
In July, Bashar al-Assad’s forces killed soldiers from the Palestinian Liberation Army, a branch of the Syrian military, as they were trying to defect. More than a dozen corpses were found near Aleppo.
As of December 6, 2012, the death toll in Syria is 44,178.
