beyond just the kitsch
of cutesy little novels where wizards and witches perform ‘Britishness’ or whatever
but also trying to claim her as some sort of National whatever
an excellent product of the british system
when in reality shes from the margins of that system
like she was homeless off and on before she got the first hp book published
which seems important
the chinese olympics were obviously a horror
with the amount of repression and police power needed to create that spectacle
but it was understandable to an extent
it was an authoritarian state showing off the products of an authoritarian state
like heres ten thousand people doing synchronized dances
emblematic of our large and disciplined labour force
heres the green shoots of the cosmopolitan middle class we’re trying to socially engineer
heres some beautiful frictionless shanghai style architecture
whatever
with these olympics you dont have that
theres no planning and theres no history
all of these things just happened
they just appeared and somehow became famous and now theyre part of the totality of Britishness
and the massive repressive apparatus is here to protect them
they happened and they created value and now we have to do everything in our power to make sure that they dont unhappen
or that other things dont happen that might interrupt the original happen and the original value
maybe if we’re lucky we can make them happen again and theyll create more value
i dunno
